How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews

Seven practical steps to get your business named in AI answers, from letting AI search bots in to Google Business Profile, reviews and answer-first pages.

TL;DR: AI assistants recommend businesses they can crawl, understand and verify across several sources. To get named by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, let their search bots in, get indexed by Google and Bing, keep your Google Business Profile and directory listings complete and consistent, earn reviews, and publish answer-first pages with real facts. There is no secret file or paid placement that does it for you.

Where do AI assistants get their recommendations?

They search the web, read the results and summarize what they find. Each tool uses its own crawler and index, but they overlap a lot.

The clearest evidence for local businesses comes from BrightLocal's local AI visibility study, published in September 2026. It analyzed nearly 2 million citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews for 1,342 business locations. It found:

  • Business websites made up 42% of all citations.
  • Google Business Profile made up 28.6% of citations and appeared in results for 94% of businesses.
  • Yelp was the next largest single source at 9.5%, followed by Facebook at 2.2%.
  • Google's AI surfaces leaned heavily on Google Business Profile. ChatGPT hardly used it and leaned on Bing instead.

So your own website does most of the work, and your third-party profiles confirm it.

You also do not need to be on page one of Google to be cited. In an Ahrefs study published in March 2026 of 863,000 search results, only about 38% of the pages cited in AI Overviews also ranked in Google's top 10. Clear, specific pages can be cited from further down.

Are people really asking AI for business recommendations?

Yes, and fast. In BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 of 1,002 US adults, 45% had used AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. ChatGPT was the most used at 31%, followed by Google AI Mode at 23%.

Most of them trust the answers. Among people who used AI this way, 63% said they trust its business recommendations. But they also check: 88% look into the sources behind AI answers, and 97% sometimes double-check recommendations against real reviews. That is why reviews and consistent listings matter as much as your website.

Step 1: Can AI search bots reach your website?

If a bot cannot crawl your pages, it cannot cite them. Check your robots.txt file and any firewall or CDN bot settings. The bots that matter for recommendations are the search bots, not the training bots:

PerplexityBotPerplexitySurfaces and links sites in Perplexity answersAllow
Claude-SearchBotAnthropicClaude search resultsAllow
GooglebotGoogleGoogle Search, AI Overviews and AI ModeAllow
BingbotMicrosoftBing and Microsoft CopilotAllow

OpenAI's crawler documentation is explicit: "OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." Perplexity's bot documentation says PerplexityBot "is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models." You can block training bots and still allow search bots.

Also make sure your key content is in the HTML as text, not hidden inside images, PDFs or scripts that need a click to load.

Step 2: Are you indexed by Google and Bing?

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode use the normal Google index. Google's guidance on AI features says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode." Microsoft Copilot runs on Bing, and BrightLocal's study shows ChatGPT also leans on Bing for local results.

  • Verify your site in Google Search Console and submit your XML sitemap.
  • Do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools. It takes ten minutes and many small businesses skip it.
  • Check the Pages report in Search Console for important URLs marked "not indexed".

Our technical SEO checklist walks through the rest of the crawl and index basics.

Step 3: Is your Google Business Profile complete?

For any business with a location or service area, this is the single biggest third-party source in Google's AI answers. Fill in every field:

  • Primary and secondary categories that match what you actually sell
  • Services or products with short descriptions
  • Service areas, opening hours and holiday hours
  • Photos of your work, team and premises
  • A business description that states who you serve and where

Google's AI features guidance also lists "checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date" as a best practice.

Step 4: Do your business details match everywhere?

AI tools cross-check facts. If your website says one address, Yelp says another and LinkedIn lists a service you stopped offering, the model has less reason to trust any of it. Keep these identical across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn, Clutch and industry directories:

  • Business name, exactly as written
  • Address or service area, and phone number
  • Core services, in the same words
  • Founding year, founder name and website URL

Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data to your site so the same facts are machine-readable. Google notes the markup must match the visible text on the page.

Step 5: Are you earning reviews in the right places?

AI assistants summarize reviews, and customers use reviews to double-check AI. As the BrightLocal survey above shows, almost all AI users double-check recommendations against real reviews. Ask every happy customer for a review on Google first, then on the one or two platforms that matter in your industry. Reply to reviews, including negative ones. A clear, polite reply is also content an AI can read.

Step 6: Does your website answer the questions buyers ask?

This is where generative engine optimization comes in. The GEO study from Princeton and IIT Delhi found that adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised visibility in AI answers by about 27% to 41%, while keyword stuffing lowered it. Our plain-English guide to GEO explains the research in more detail.

For each core service, build a page that:

  1. Opens with a direct answer: what you do, for whom, where and roughly at what price.
  2. Uses H2s phrased as real questions, such as "How long does a website redesign take?"
  3. Includes specific facts: process steps, timelines, what is included, real numbers with sources.
  4. Shows proof: named client testimonials, case studies with real results, credentials.
  5. Ends with a short FAQ that answers real follow-up questions. Google no longer shows FAQ rich results (since May 2026), but the visible answers still help readers and AI tools.

Comparison and "best for" content tends to get cited, because people ask assistants to compare options. If you are honest about who you are not right for, that is a trust signal too.

Step 7: Are other sites talking about you?

Assistants weigh what others say, not only what you say. Useful mentions for a small business include local news coverage, industry association listings, podcast appearances, guest articles, partner pages and "best of" lists from credible publishers. Aim for a few relevant mentions, not hundreds of low-quality links.

Does llms.txt or special markup help?

Not much, based on current evidence. Google states it plainly:

"You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features."

Google's July 2026 guide to its AI features adds that Google Search itself does not use llms.txt. An llms.txt file is cheap to add and does no harm, but treat it as a bonus. Your time is better spent on the seven steps above.
